Saint Sophia Cathedral of Kyiv is one of the most significant monuments of 11th-century Kyivan Rus’ architecture and culture. Its mosaics, frescoes, and interiors have been preserved not only within the cathedral itself but also on vintage postcards from the 1970s — now valuable visual sources for researchers, designers, and collectors.

What’s shown on the postcards:

The postcards feature fragments of mosaics and frescoes: the image of Oranta, scenes of the Eucharist, the family of Yaroslav the Wise, decorative ornaments, a bear hunt, as well as interiors of apses, choirs, and views of Sophia’s facades. Some are based on photo reproductions from 1973, others on archival photos from the late 19th century.
