Old postcards Fruits

The fruit section holds just one card, a 1963 Soviet postcard simply titled Apples. The caption names no variety, so the subject is the apple in general — the fruit of the domestic apple tree, Malus domestica, which is grown worldwide in more than 7,500 cultivars.

The domestic apple belongs to the rose family. DNA studies identify its main wild ancestor as Malus sieversii, a wild apple of Central Asia named after the botanist Johann Sievers. It grows mainly in the Ili valley of southern Kazakhstan, and the area around Alma-Ata is home to wild apple forests; the city’s name is often linked to the Kazakh word alma, apple.

For collectors of food and garden themes on vintage postcards, this early-1960s card is a compact reminder that the apple has been cultivated across Eurasia for thousands of years.
