Old postcards Paintings by various authors

Paintings by various authors holds Soviet postcards of paintings by artists who have no subsection of their own. The oldest cards are 1930s reproductions, several of them showing well-known nineteenth-century canvases; the newest were printed in the 1980s.

The 1930s group includes Vasily Vereshchagin’s At the Door of Tamerlane (card 1931; the painting is dated 1872), Pavel Fedotov’s The Major’s Courtship (card 1934, canvas 1848) and Vasily Perov’s Tea-Drinking in Mytishchi (card 1939, painting 1862) — some of the most familiar images of nineteenth-century Russian art.

Cards from the 1960s and 1970s bring other names. Ivan Kramskoi’s Unknown Woman, painted in 1883, appeared on a 1975 card. The same year is printed on Peonies by Natalia Goncharova, a figure of the Russian avant-garde (the caption also gives the painting’s own date, 1911), and on The Goat by Yuri Vasnetsov, a painter and book illustrator.

Captions keep artists’ names and titles exactly as Soviet publishers printed them, so searching by the painter’s surname works best here.
