Old postcards Ivan Semenov Maksimovich

Ivan Semenov (1906–1982) was a Soviet graphic artist and caricaturist, named People’s Artist of the USSR in 1974. From 1935 he worked for Krokodil, the main Soviet satirical magazine, later became known for children’s book illustrations, and in 1956 initiated the children’s humour magazine Vesyolye Kartinki (Merry Pictures), which he edited until 1972.

This subsection holds his comic series about anglers: Soviet postcards, all printed in 1956. Most captions name a type of fisherman. The Theorist and The Braggart are characters, while The Spinning Angler, The Ledger Angler and The Bream Man are defined by tackle or catch.

Other cards name a moment or an activity rather than a person: Snagged, On Small Bloodworm, Going Fishing. Together they make a small dictionary of angling life that needs no explanation for anyone who has waited by the water with a rod.

The English titles on this page are translations of the original Russian captions, with obvious misprints corrected.
