Old postcards VDNKh

VDNKh, the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR, occupies a large exhibition ground in the north of Moscow. It first opened on 1 August 1939, and from 1959 it presented every branch of the Soviet economy rather than agriculture alone. One of its main landmarks is the Friendship of Peoples fountain, completed in 1954 to a design by Konstantin Topuridze and Grigory Konstantinovsky: a sheaf of wheat, hemp and sunflowers ringed by 16 female figures covered in gold leaf.

The Soviet postcards of VDNKh in this section come from a 1977 set dominated by the industry pavilions: Space (Kosmos), Atomic Energy, Computer Technology, Radio Electronics and the USSR Hydrometeorological Service, Metallurgy and the Coal Industry, the Soviet Press and the Electrification of the USSR. Agriculture is represented by the Livestock Breeding pavilion and by Mechanisation and Electrification of Agriculture, social themes by Labour and Leisure and by USSR Public Health.

Between the pavilions the cards show the main entrance and Friendship of Peoples Square with its fountains, the recreation area and the exhibition under snow. Taken together, they reveal which industries the exhibition put forward in the late 1970s.
