Old postcards Moldova
The core of the Moldova section is a 1974 set of views of Kishinev, then the capital of the Moldavian SSR, formed on 2 August 1940. These Soviet postcards of Moldova show the Government House, Lenin Avenue, the Central Post Office, the Arch of Victory, 28 June Street with the city council building — built as the city duma to a design by Alexander Bernardazzi — Negruzzi Boulevard from above and the Turist hotel with the monument to the Komsomol heroes.
Culture is well covered: the Pushkin Moldavian Music and Drama Theatre, the Chekhov Russian Drama Theatre, the Republican Art Museum and the Museum of History and Local Lore, the Academy of Sciences of the Moldavian SSR. There are also monuments to Kotovsky and to the fighters for Soviet power, the State Bank building and the railway station. Earlier cards from 1968 show the State University and the station.
The 1978 cards leave the capital: the fortress at Soroki, founded by Stephen the Great in 1499 and rebuilt in stone in 1543–1546, the Kotovsky cinema in Beltsy, the village of Butucheny in the Orgeyev district, the Pushkin monument in the village of Pushkino, the Kodry forests and the “graphics” of vineyard rows.
Modern imitations have no place here: these are scans of the original Soviet postcards, and new cards join the Moldova section as the archive is digitised.
