This section collects view postcards of Chernihiv through 1991. These images record one of Ukraine’s oldest cities on the Desna River in the late Soviet period.
Subjects include the railway station, the city post office, the Druzhba shopping centre, and cannons from the fortress on the Val. Also featured are the regional music and drama theatre named after T.H. Shevchenko and Heroes Alley with monuments to M.M. Kotsyubynsky and Antonov-Ovseenko.
Memorial sites appear on several cards: the Tank monument on Victory Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Glory Hill, Kotsyubynsky’s grave, and a monument to V.I. Lenin — typical views from Chernihiv series of 1978.
Dates and captions are useful for collectors and urban historians. The catalogue is expanded with new views of Chernihiv; browse the current cards and compare them with other Ukrainian cities in the Old Postcards archive.
