This 1978 view postcard shows the Druzhba shopping centre and cannons mounted on the rampart of Chernihiv’s ancient fortress.
What is shown on the postcard
The frame combines a large department-store building with wide shop windows and a «Druzhba» sign, and historic artillery pieces on the green earthwork in the foreground. The composition links late-Soviet retail architecture with the defensive heritage of the 11th–13th centuries.
Historical note
Chernihiv’s Detinets is one of the oldest fortified centres of Kyivan Rus. The cannons on the Val are a long-standing part of the city’s museum landscape, illustrating the fortress’s military past. The Druzhba store belongs to typical Soviet retail construction of the 1960s–1970s.
Present day
The Detinets area is part of the «Ancient Chernihiv» national architectural and historical reserve. The cannons remain on tourist routes; central retail buildings have been renovated several times since 1991.
