Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyzstan section is still small and consists of one set: Frunze in 1974. Mikhail Frunze was born here in 1885, and the city became the capital of the Kirghiz SSR in 1936, when the republic was made a full union republic.

Fittingly, the set includes subjects tied to the city’s name: the M.V. Frunze house-museum and his monument. Alongside are the Government House of the Kirghiz SSR, the Kyrgyzstan hotel, the Lenin monument, the monument to General I.V. Panfilov, who commanded the 316th Rifle Division in the defence of Moscow in 1941, and Frunze airport.

Many cards show the green side of the city: Theatre Square and Central Square, swans at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the Kirghiz SSR, and the summer pavilion of the Druzhba café. One card in the set is titled “Kyrgyz Melody”.

The Soviet postcards of Kyrgyzstan shown here come straight off the scanner from cards printed at the time, not from retro-style recreations. Should further Kirghiz towns turn up in the collection, they will be added.
