These Soviet postcards of the Kamchatka Region date from 1979, and most of them show monuments in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The town was founded in 1740 by members of the Second Kamchatka Expedition, and in 1787 the ships of the French navigator Lapérouse anchored in its harbour. A column in his memory went up in 1843 and appears on the card “Monument to Jean-François de La Pérouse”.
The other town cards belong to the twentieth century: the Monument of Glory to the border guards, opened in 1976, and the monument to the Pacific Fleet sailors of the Second World War.
Kamchatka’s volcanoes appear on “Kamchatka. Eruption of the Tolbachik volcano”. The card came out a few years after the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption of 1975–1976, only the sixth large fissure eruption recorded in historical times.
