What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a perspective of a city street with two-way traffic. In the foreground, a red Soviet-made passenger car drives along the road. Reinforced concrete utility poles with trolleybus overhead lines run along the roadside. A triangular warning traffic sign hangs suspended over the road.
The right side of the street features multi-story tower-style residential buildings made of light brick (9 stories high) with balconies. Young deciduous trees are planted in front of the buildings, and pedestrians are walking on the sidewalk.
Historical note
The construction of the Cheremushki residential district in Odesa began at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s on the territory of a former military training ground. This large-scale project aimed to resolve the acute housing shortage in the city. The area was planned using standardized series of low- and mid-rise residential buildings.
Novoselov Street was one of the first and major transport arteries of the new microdistrict. It was later renamed in honor of the prominent Soviet ophthalmologist, Academician Vladimir Petrovich Filatov, whose scientific and clinical career was closely connected to Odesa.
Present day
Today, Akademika Filatova Street remains an important thoroughfare in the Khadzhibeyiskyi (formerly Malynovskyi) district of Odesa. The trees planted during the Soviet era have grown significantly and now almost completely obscure the facades of the residential buildings from the street view.
The architectural appearance of the buildings has changed due to residents glazing their balconies and the conversion of ground floors into commercial establishments, such as shops, pharmacies, and offices.
