The 1973 postcard features the Regional Music and Drama Theater named after N.A. Shchors in Zaporizhzhia, one of the significant cultural institutions of the city during the Soviet period.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures the main facade of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Music and Drama Theater, constructed in the style of Soviet Neoclassicism. A central portico with ten Corinthian columns supports a pediment adorned with a bas-relief composition. A sculptural group is installed on the theater’s roof.

On the left side of the facade, a large propaganda banner is displayed, featuring the symbols “XXV CPSU” and an image of a worker holding a red flag. In front of the theater, Sobornyi Avenue (formerly Lenin Avenue) stretches, with a red bus, likely a LAZ-695, traveling along it. Pedestrians are visible on the sidewalks. In the background on the right, a multi-story residential or administrative building can be seen.

Historical note

The theater building was constructed in 1953 by architects S. A. Gorfunkel and V. G. Shtyvko as part of Zaporizhzhia’s post-war reconstruction and restoration efforts. It embodies the characteristic features of Stalinist Empire style or Soviet Neoclassicism. The theater was named in honor of Nikolay Shchors, a Red Army commander during the Civil War. Prior to the construction of this specific building, the theater, founded in 1929, was housed in other premises.

Present day

Currently, the institution is known as the Zaporizhzhia Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after V. G. Magar. It continues to be a leading center for theatrical arts in Zaporizhzhia and the region. The building retains its historical appearance and remains an architectural landmark in the central part of Sobornyi Avenue.
