This 1969 postcard from Zaporizhzhia captures the famous Zaporizhzhia Oak on Khortytsia Island, known as one of Ukraine’s oldest and most revered natural symbols.

What is shown on the postcard

The image features the majestic Zaporizhzhia Oak with its sprawling canopy and massive trunk, dominating the composition. In the lower part of the frame, a group of children can be seen lined up, observing the oak through a green tubular metal fence. The background consists of dense foliage from other trees, creating the impression of a natural area or park. Thin wires are visible through the oak’s branches, presumably supporting them or part of the local infrastructure.

Historical note

The Zaporizhzhia Oak, referred to as the ‘300-year-old oak’ at the time of the postcard’s creation, is considered a legendary tree and a symbol of Ukrainian history, particularly associated with the Zaporozhian Cossacks. According to legend, Cossacks gathered under this oak, and it is said that Bohdan Khmelnytsky took an oath here, and Hetman Ivan Sirko wrote a letter to the Turkish Sultan. It is also linked to pagan beliefs and tree worship in ancient Slavic culture. The Zaporizhzhia Oak is recognized as a national natural monument.

Present day

Currently, the Zaporizhzhia Oak is part of the Historical and Cultural Complex ‘Zaporizhzhia Oak’ on Khortytsia Island. Although the main part of the tree has succumbed to disease and natural factors in recent decades, it remains an important tourist attraction. Conservation efforts are ongoing around the oak, focusing on strengthening the remaining living branches and maintaining its historical significance, including the planting of young successor oaks.
