What is shown on the postcard
The postcard depicts the central fountain of the Pioneer Garden, known as “Friendship Fountain” or “Pioneers’ Fountain”. The fountain’s composition includes a sculptural group of dancing children surrounding a pedestal, topped with a figure of a pioneer holding a symbolic banner. Around the fountain, people are seen strolling, along with benches for rest and well-maintained flowerbeds. In the background, through the foliage of the trees, a distinctive multi-story building of Stalinist architecture, an administrative facility, is visible.
Historical note
The City Pioneer Garden was laid out in Zaporizhia in the early 1950s on the site of the former Church Square, as part of the large-scale reconstruction of the city after the Great Patriotic War. It became one of the significant recreational spots for city residents and a symbol of post-war renewal. The “Friendship Fountain”, opened during the same period, quickly became one of Zaporizhia’s landmarks. Subsequently, the Pioneer Garden was renamed Pushkin Square.
Present day
Currently, Pushkin Square continues to function as a public space in the center of Zaporizhzhia. The “Friendship Fountain” has been preserved and remains one of its main attractions, although its sculptural group has undergone some changes. The administrative building in the background of the postcard is still occupied by the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, maintaining its historical appearance.
