The 1984 postcard presents a view of the N.A. Shchors Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theater in Zaporizhzhia, an important architectural landmark of the city.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard prominently displays the main facade of the N.A. Shchors Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theater. The building is designed in the Stalinist Neoclassical style, featuring a monumental portico with tall Corinthian columns supporting a classical pediment adorned with sculptural compositions. A multi-figured sculpture group crowns the apex of the roof. To the right of the theater, a busy urban thoroughfare, Sobornyi Avenue, is visible with vehicular traffic and a trolleybus, flanked by rows of trees and multi-story buildings.
Historical note
The history of the building dates back to the pre-war period. Originally constructed in 1929 as the Club of Metallurgists (later the Club named after Feliks Dzerzhinsky), it suffered significant damage during World War II. After the war, the building was extensively reconstructed and repurposed under the guidance of architects G. I. Vologodsky and I. L. Bogomolov, reopening in 1953 as the Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theater. It was then named after Mykola Shchors, a prominent military figure of the Russian Civil War. This post-war reconstruction gave the building its current monumental neoclassical appearance.
Present day
Today, the theater continues its cultural mission as the Zaporizhzhia Academic Regional Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theater named after V.G. Magar. While its name has changed to honor the distinguished Ukrainian actor and director Volodymyr Magar, the exterior of the building largely retains the architectural features captured on this 1984 postcard. It remains one of the most prominent architectural landmarks and cultural centers in Zaporizhzhia.
