This postcard captures the Lahti Restaurant in Zaporizhzhia in 1984, which was a symbol of the city and Soviet architecture of that period.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows the facade of the Lahti Restaurant, located on the ground floor of a multi-story residential building. The building exhibits characteristic features of Soviet modernism, with horizontally extended balconies and large glass windows for the restaurant. The sign “Restaurant Lahti” is in a stylized font with a decorative logo element. A wide avenue with active car traffic and a Škoda 9Tr trolleybus in the foreground runs in front of the building. A green lawn with a small sculptural composition featuring a red star and a hammer and sickle is situated on the median strip of the avenue.

Historical note

The Lahti Restaurant was opened in Zaporizhzhia in the 1970s and was named after the Finnish city of Lahti, which is a sister city to Zaporizhzhia. It was one of the city’s prestigious restaurants, offering European and Soviet cuisine. Located on the city’s central avenue (then Lenin Avenue, now Sobornyi Avenue), it was a popular venue for celebrations and business meetings.

Present day

The building that housed the Lahti Restaurant stands to this day at 175A Sobornyi Avenue. However, the restaurant itself ceased operations in the post-Soviet period. Over the years, other commercial establishments, including banks and shops, have occupied these premises. The architectural appearance of the ground floor facade has been partially altered, but the overall structure of the building remains recognizable.
