Card Palace of Pioneers, Gomel, 1979

A 1979 Soviet postcard depicting the Palace of Pioneers in Gomel, which was housed in the historic Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace.

What is shown on the postcard

The photograph captures the main facade of the two-story neoclassical palace with a white four-column portico topped by a low dome. The Belarusian inscription “ПАЛАЦ ПІЯНЭРАЎ” is clearly visible on the portico’s frieze. In front of the main entrance, there is a multi-tiered circular fountain surrounded by neatly trimmed green hedges and vibrant flowerbeds with red and white flowers.

Historical note

The Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace was built between the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century as an outstanding monument of neoclassicism. Following the nationalization of property in the Soviet period, the estate was repurposed for public use. Starting in 1940, it housed the Gomel Regional Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren. The building was heavily damaged by fire and destruction during World War II but was fully restored by 1953.

Present day

Today, the former Palace of Pioneers building functions as the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble, serving as the city’s central museum complex. The restored halls house a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the region and the former owners of the estate. The fountain in front of the facade and the surrounding park are carefully preserved and restored.
