A two-part scenic postcard from 1990, showcasing the natural landscapes and wildlife of the Carpathian State Nature National Park (reserve) near the town of Yaremche.
What is shown on the postcard
The top half of the postcard captures a summer Carpathian landscape: in the foreground, a row of traditional cone-shaped haystacks (stooks) is lined up, followed by rural houses, trees, an electricity pylon, and a gentle green mountain slope leading up to a forested ridge. The bottom half depicts a herd of European bisons grazing in a green meadow against a background of mixed forest and mountain peaks under a cloudy sky.
Historical note
Established in 1980, the Carpathian State Nature National Park was the first national park in Ukraine. It was founded to protect the unique forest and alpine ecosystems of the Carpathians, including rare species of flora and fauna. Such postcards were widely produced during the late Soviet period to promote ecological tourism and showcase environmental conservation efforts, such as the restoration of the European bison population.
Present day
Today, the park’s territory remains a crucial component of Ukraine’s protected areas, attracting visitors with its hiking trails, waterfalls, and diverse landscapes around Yaremche. Traditional agricultural practices, including hand-mowing and drying hay in stooks, are still preserved in local Carpathian villages.
