The 1989 postcard showcases three significant monuments of Evpatoria, each commemorating important events and figures in the city’s history.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts three monumental objects: in the upper left corner, a white obelisk with a cross and stylized date symbols, accompanied by an antique cannon. In the upper right corner, a statue of a man in a military coat stands on a dark pedestal featuring relief images of wings and an anchor. The lower part of the postcard displays a multi-figure sculptural composition depicting a group of people in heroic poses, set on a wide base amidst dense foliage.

Historical note

The white obelisk with the cannon is a monument to the soldiers who fell during the Crimean War of 1853-1856, erected in 1858-1859 in honor of the Anglo-French-Turkish forces who landed in Evpatoria on February 5 (17), 1855. The cannon is an authentic artifact from that era. The statue in the military coat is dedicated to Semen Timofeevich Duvakin (1909-1952), a Soviet military pilot and Hero of the Soviet Union, distinguished for his service during World War II. The lower composition is the Monument to the Heroes of the Evpatoria Landing of 1942, commemorating the Soviet naval landing operation conducted on January 5, 1942. This landing, aimed at diverting enemy forces from besieged Sevastopol, resulted in heavy losses despite the participants’ heroism.

Present day

Currently, all three monuments continue to serve as important historical and cultural landmarks in Evpatoria. They are regularly maintained and accessible to the public, serving as reminders of significant historical events and heroes. The monuments are organically integrated into the urban environment, preserving their memorial function.
