This 1985 postcard from Yevpatoria features the Hotel Ukraina and the nearby monument to the writer A.M. Gorky, both prominent objects of the city’s architecture and cultural landscape.
What is shown on the postcard
On the left foreground of the postcard, the Hotel Ukraina building is depicted, designed in Art Nouveau style with elements of Neoclassicism. It features a corner rotunda with a dome, distinctive balconies, and the inscription “ГОСТИНИЦА” (Hotel) on its facade. The street in front of the hotel is bustling with pedestrians. To the right, the A.M. Gorky Monument is visible: a bust of the writer mounted on a tall concrete stele. The composition is complemented by a small fountain or water feature in the foreground and the surrounding park greenery.
Historical note
The building, now known as Hotel Ukraina, was constructed in 1910–1911 according to the design of architect A.L. Genrikhsen. It initially operated as a luxurious hotel called “Du Nord” or “Riviera”. After the October Revolution, the hotel was nationalized and renamed “Ukraina,” becoming one of Yevpatoria’s largest hotels. The A.M. Gorky Monument was erected in Theater Square (now Gorky Square) in 1966. V. Klokov and V. Sukhanov were the sculptors, and A. Petrov was the architect.
Present day
Hotel Ukraina continues to operate as a hotel, currently known as “Palace Ukraine.” The building has largely retained its historical appearance, despite undergoing renovations and modernizations. The A.M. Gorky Monument also remains in its original location in the park named after the writer and is an integral part of Yevpatoria’s central architectural ensemble.
