This postcard from 1976 features a view of the ‘Tavria’ Sanatorium, one of the significant health and wellness complexes in the city of Yevpatoria.
What is shown on the postcard
The image captures two main buildings of the sanatorium: a high-rise structure on the right side of the composition and a lower, elongated building on the left. Both buildings are designed in the characteristic Soviet modernist style with rectangular forms and rows of balconies. A large inscription, “НАША ЦЕЛЬ-КОММУНИЗМ” (Our Goal is Communism), is visible on the roof of the high-rise building. In the foreground, amidst well-maintained flowerbeds and greenery, a sign reads “САНАТОРИЙ ТАВРИЯ”. Two figures are seen strolling along an asphalt pathway.
Historical note
The ‘Tavria’ Sanatorium was opened in Yevpatoria in 1973 and quickly became one of the largest year-round multidisciplinary medical and diagnostic complexes on the Crimean Peninsula. It specialized in the treatment of musculoskeletal system diseases, nervous system disorders, respiratory and circulatory system ailments, utilizing Yevpatoria’s unique natural factors – the marine climate, therapeutic muds of Lake Moinaky, and mineral waters.
During the Soviet period, ‘Tavria’ was a departmental sanatorium, hosting thousands of vacationers annually and offering not only treatment but also cultural and leisure programs. Its architectural appearance, as seen on the postcard, reflects the emphasis on functionality and scale characteristic of Soviet health resorts of that era.
Present day
After the collapse of the USSR and until 2014, the ‘Tavria’ Sanatorium operated as a state unitary enterprise of Ukraine, continuing its work as a multidisciplinary medical institution. Subsequently, it transitioned under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation and has continued its operations, maintaining its primary profile as a health resort.
The modern ‘Tavria’ Sanatorium has undergone several modernizations, yet its main buildings, including those depicted on the postcard, retain their historical appearance. It remains one of Yevpatoria’s leading health resorts, adapting to changing market demands and offering a wide range of wellness services.
