Historical note
Lenin Avenue (modern Sobornyi Avenue) was developed after World War II as part of the reconstruction plan for Zaporizhzhia, which suffered significant damage during the occupation. The ‘House with a Spire’ (Sobornyi Avenue, 175), built between 1949 and 1953 to a design by architect I.L. Kozliner, is a symbol of Zaporizhzhia’s post-war architecture and a central feature of the avenue. In the 1950s, the avenue was actively built up with grand buildings in the Stalinist Empire style, creating a majestic and ceremonial appearance for the city’s main street. The tram service, visible in the postcard, has been and remains an important part of Zaporizhzhia’s transport system.
Present day
Today, Lenin Avenue has been renamed Sobornyi Avenue, but it retains its historical layout and much of its post-war development. The ‘House with a Spire’ continues to serve administrative functions and remains one of the city’s architectural dominants. The avenue is still a busy thoroughfare with tram service, maintaining its status as Zaporizhzhia’s main avenue. Many elements of its landscaping, such as green spaces and wide sidewalks, have also been preserved and modernized.
