Card Khortytsya Island, Zaporozhye, 1985

The 1985 postcard features one of Khortytsia Island’s key landmarks — the Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks History, which was solemnly opened two years prior, in 1983. The museum building is situated on an elevated position, offering panoramic views of the Dnieper River.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground of the postcard is the building of the Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks History, designed in the Soviet modernist style with elements of brutalism, characteristic of 1970s-1980s architecture. Its facades are partially clad in stone. A group of visitors, likely an excursion group, is visible in front of the entrance. In the background, beyond the wooded slope, power line towers and the structures of a bridge across the Dnieper River, connecting the banks of Zaporizhzhia, can be seen.

Historical note

The Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks History was opened on October 14, 1983, as a branch of the National Reserve “Khortytsia.” Its establishment aimed to immortalize the heroic history of the Zaporizhian Cossacks and Khortytsia Island’s role in the formation of Ukrainian statehood. The museum’s exhibits include archaeological finds, weapons, Cossack household items, and dioramas dedicated to significant events. The architectural project for the museum was developed by a group of architects led by S.V. Smirnov.

Present day

Today, the Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks History remains an important cultural and historical center, attracting numerous tourists. Over the years, the museum’s exhibitions have been updated and expanded with new artifacts several times. It continues to play a crucial role in preserving and popularizing the legacy of the Zaporizhian Cossacks and the historical significance of Khortytsia Island as the cradle of Ukrainian Cossackdom.
