What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the modernist multi-story university building featuring a massive canopy over the main entrance and outdoor staircases. The rooftop features a light sign reading “СЛАВА ЛЕНИНСКОМУ КОМСОМОЛУ!” (Glory to the Lenin Komsomol!), and a poster with the coat of arms of the BSSR is visible on the side. In front of the building, there is a wide pedestrian zone paved with concrete slabs, with people walking by. Soviet cars are visible on the roadway of Sovetskaya Street.
Historical note
Gomel State University was established in 1929 as a pedagogical institute and gained university status in 1969. The Building No. 1 shown on the postcard was constructed in the late 1960s in the style of Soviet architectural modernism, becoming a key urban landmark in the northern part of Sovetskaya Street.
Present day
Today, this serves as the main building of the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University (named after him in 1988). The exterior of the building has been preserved without significant alterations, though the Soviet slogans and posters have been removed, and the surrounding area has been landscaped.
