This 1979 Soviet postcard offers a panoramic view of Victory Square (Maidan Peremohy) in Zhytomyr, capturing the architectural landscape and monuments of the Soviet era.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground, a T-34-85 tank monument is pictured on a granite pedestal, surrounded by small lawns and walking pedestrians. In the background on the right stands the multi-story Zhytomyr Hotel with a rooftop sign, and to the left is a five-story residential building surrounded by green trees.

Historical note

Victory Square began its development in the post-war years on the site of destroyed historic quarters. In 1965, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of victory in World War II, a T-34 tank monument dedicated to the city’s liberators was erected. The Zhytomyr Hotel was built in the late 1960s, becoming a core element of the square’s modernist ensemble.

Present day

In May 2022, the T-34 tank monument was dismantled from Victory Square and relocated to the area near the Monument of Glory. The former Zhytomyr Hotel building has undergone renovation, changing its exterior appearance, and now houses offices and retail spaces.
