The presented 1969 postcard captures the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station (DniproHES) in Zaporizhzhia, one of the key objects of Soviet industrialization and the largest hydroelectric power station on the Dnieper River.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts a panoramic view of the DniproHES dam from the downstream side. The curved concrete dam with its characteristic stepped spillway elements is clearly visible. On the left side of the image, a part of the power station’s machine hall building can be seen. Above the dam, a metal structure, presumably a gantry crane used for operating the spillway gates, rises. In the foreground are the waters of the Dnieper River, with some protruding rock formations.

Historical note

Construction of DniproHES began in 1927 and was completed in 1932, becoming a significant project of the GOELRO plan. The station played a crucial role in the electrification of the southern regions of the USSR and the development of heavy industry. During World War II, DniproHES was partially destroyed, but by the early 1950s, it was fully rebuilt and modernized. By 1969, it operated as one of the most important elements of the energy system of the Ukrainian SSR.

Present day

Currently, DniproHES continues to be a critically important object of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, providing electricity and regulating the flow of the Dnieper River. It remains one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in the country. The station has undergone several stages of modernization and reconstruction, which has allowed its operational characteristics to be maintained. Its strategic importance persists, especially in the context of the region’s contemporary development.
