A 1957 postcard from Zaporizhzhia features the architectural ensemble at the intersection of what were then Angolenka Street and Lenin Avenue, a key thoroughfare of the city.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground of the postcard, a wide street is visible with a central dividing strip designed as a green square with paths and young trees. To the right stands a monumental multi-story building in the Stalinist Empire style, distinguished by a central portico with columns and a pediment, as well as an arched gallery on the lower level. To the left, another massive building is seen, accented by a corner tower-like superstructure. Scattered pedestrians and vehicles are noticeable on the street and in the square, conveying an atmosphere of post-war recovery and urban development.

Historical note

The buildings depicted on the postcard are part of a large-scale post-war reconstruction project of Zaporizhzhia, which was severely damaged during World War II. The central part of the city, including Lenin Avenue (now Sobornyi Prospekt), was built in the 1940s–1950s in the Stalinist Empire style. The building on the right, known as the “House of Offices” (now the Regional Council of Trade Unions), constructed in the early 1950s, formed a significant part of the avenue’s new architectural appearance. Angolenka Street (now Zaporizka Street) was named after A.I. Angolenko, a Soviet military leader.

Present day

Today, the former Lenin Avenue is known as Sobornyi Prospekt, and Angolenka Street has been renamed Zaporizka Street. The buildings shown on the postcard have retained their historical architectural design and continue to serve residential and administrative functions, remaining a recognizable part of central Zaporizhzhia. The green areas along the avenue also maintain their role in the urban landscape.
