A double-view Soviet postcard from 1990 showcasing scenic spots of the Carpathian resort Yaremche: a mountain road with a public bus and the building of the local ‘Kurortnyi’ department store.
What is shown on the postcard
The upper view captures a passenger bus driving along an asphalted mountain road against a backdrop of green slopes dotted with sparse wooden Hutsul-style cottages and spruce trees. The lower view depicts the facade of a two-story light-stone department store with a prominent sign reading ‘КУРОРТНИЙ’ (Kurortnyi). In front of the building on a paved street, pedestrians in late-Soviet fashion are walking, and a white GAZ-24 Volga passenger car is parked by the curb.
Historical note
During the Soviet period, Yaremche (officially spelled Yaremcha until 2006) actively developed as a climatic health resort of Union-wide importance. The ‘Kurortnyi’ department store, located on the central Svobody Street, was an essential hub of the town’s retail infrastructure, offering manufactured goods, souvenirs, and daily necessities to tourists and locals alike.
Present day
Today, the building of the former Soviet department store has been renovated and adapted for various private retail shops and commercial activities. Svobody Street remains the main transport artery of the town, serving as part of the H-09 highway. Yaremche continues to be one of the most popular tourism destinations in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
