This 1980 Soviet collectible postcard features a view of Yakub Kolas Square in Minsk, one of the primary urban architectural hubs along Lenin Avenue (currently Independence Avenue).
What is shown on the postcard
The photograph captures the central part of the square with its pedestrian plaza, lawns, and young trees. On the right stands the building of the Yakub Kolas Minsk Printing Plant, characterized by its prominent tower and Soviet emblem on the facade. On the left, a multi-story residential building features a Belarusian neon slogan on the roof: “КВІТНЕЙ, КРАІНА САВЕТАЎ” (“Flourish, Land of Soviets”). In the park area, parts of the monument to the People’s Poet of the BSSR Yakub Kolas, unveiled in 1972, can be distinguished.
Historical note
The square began taking shape in the 1930s on the site of the historic Kamaroŭka pasture (hence its original name, Kamaroŭskaya Square). Post-war redesign efforts over the following decades shaped its neoclassical architectural ensemble. It was renamed in honor of the classic Belarusian writer Yakub Kolas in 1956 following his death.
Present day
Today, Yakub Kolas Square preserves its Soviet-era architectural appearance. The printing plant building has been reconstructed, and the surrounding residential buildings are designated as architectural monuments. The square remains an important transport and cultural hub in Minsk, home to the metro station of the same name, which opened in 1984.
