A collectible 1981 postcard presents a panoramic view of Teatralna Square in Uzhhorod, captured from the opposite bank of the Uzh River.
What is shown on the postcard
The image captures the Uzh River with a metal quay railing in the foreground. On the opposite bank, one can see the stone retaining wall, a section of the Pedestrian Bridge on the right, the building housing the “Barvinok” children’s store with its prominent signage, the puppet theater building, and the twin towers of the Holy Cross Cathedral rising in the background. The left side features a building facade densely covered in wild ivy.
Historical note
Teatralna Square has historically served as the cultural and administrative core of old Uzhhorod. The theater building visible in the postcard was constructed in the early 20th century as the “Urania” city theater. During the Soviet period, the adjacent modernist building housed the popular “Barvinok” children’s department store. The Pedestrian Bridge connects Teatralna Square with Sandor Petofi Square.
Present day
Today, Teatralna Square remains a pedestrian-only zone and a popular tourist destination. The historic theater building houses the Zakarpattia Academic Regional Puppet Theater “Bavka”. The architectural ensemble of the square has largely retained its historical appearance, though Soviet-era signage has been removed and the facades have undergone restoration.
