A collectible 1980 Soviet postcard showcasing an open-air exhibition of wheeled “Belarus” tractors manufactured by the Minsk Tractor Works.
What is shown on the postcard
The foreground of the postcard features a lineup of red wheeled tractors of the MTZ-80 family, manufactured by the Minsk Tractor Works. The vehicles are arranged on an outdoor exhibition ground paved with concrete slabs. In the background, an administrative building is visible on the left, while the distinctive circular pavilion of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the BSSR (VDNKh BSSR) with flags on its roof stands on the upper right.
Historical note
Founded in 1946, the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ) was one of the largest agricultural machinery manufacturers in the USSR by the 1980s. The MTZ-80 and MTZ-82 tractor family, introduced into mass production in 1974, was exported to dozens of countries worldwide. The VDNKh BSSR exhibition grounds on Yanka Kupala Street regularly hosted open-air expositions demonstrating the republic’s industrial achievements, including agricultural engineering.
Present day
The circular VDNKh BSSR pavilion, designed by architect S. Botkovsky and completed in 1968, served as a prominent public landmark in Minsk for decades. In 2016, the pavilion was demolished to clear the site for a new multi-use hotel and business complex. The Minsk Tractor Works remains operational today, manufacturing machinery under the globally recognized “Belarus” brand.
