This 1980 Soviet postcard features the facade of the Trade Complex (Torgovyi Kompleks) in Irkutsk, one of the city’s largest retail enterprises during the late Soviet period.
What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground, a parking lot displays Soviet passenger cars of various colors, including VAZ and Moskvitch models. The background features the multi-story modernist building of the Trade Complex with light-colored vertical concrete piers. A large rooftop sign reads “САЛОН НОВОБРАЧНЫХ” (Newlyweds’ Salon), and the emblem “ТК” is mounted on the left elevator tower. Pedestrians and urban greenery are visible near the entrance.
Historical note
The Trade Complex on Litvinova Street was opened in Irkutsk in the late 1970s. The building was designed in the Soviet modernist style, emphasizing functionalism and geometric forms. The “Newlyweds’ Salon,” advertised on the roof, was a specialized store where engaged couples could purchase scarce consumer goods using special vouchers issued by the registry office (ZAGS).
Present day
Today, the building continues to operate as a shopping mall, retaining its historical name “Torgovyi Kompleks”. During renovations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the original modernist facade was significantly altered, with the vertical piers covered by modern composite cladding and the Soviet-era signs removed.
