The 1967 postcard captures the atmosphere of summer recreation at the Pioneer Camp of the Dnieper Railway in Evpatoria, one of Crimea’s popular children’s resorts.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground of the postcard, a well-maintained camp area is visible with paved paths, flower beds, and benches where children are relaxing. At the center of the composition is a multi-story building with light-colored walls, balconies on the second and third floors, and a distinctive vertical extension or tower with a balcony on the upper level. On the wall of the building, there is a large decorative element, possibly a mosaic or painting, depicting a sailing ship, which emphasizes the theme of children’s seaside recreation. Partially visible on the right is a fragment of another modern-style building with large windows. Children, dressed in light summer clothes, are playing and walking around the grounds, creating a lively and relaxed atmosphere of a summer day.

Historical note

The Pioneer Camp of the Dnieper Railway, often referred to as the S.M. Kirov Pioneer Camp, was one of many children’s health facilities in Evpatoria during the Soviet period. It was intended for the summer recreation and health improvement of children whose parents worked for the Dnieper Railway. Evpatoria, thanks to its unique climate, shallow Kalamita Bay, and therapeutic muds, was recognized as an all-Union children’s health resort, and such camps played a key role in organizing leisure and health for young citizens.

Present day

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the former Pioneer Camp of the Dnieper Railway continued to function as a children’s health complex. Today, it is home to the Children’s Clinical Sanatorium “Dnipro,” which maintains the traditions of children’s recreation and treatment at the Evpatoria resort. Many buildings, including those depicted on the postcard, may have been reconstructed or supplemented with new constructions, but the overall function and focus of the facility on children’s health have been preserved.
