A panoramic view from the Central Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv, captured on a Soviet postcard from 1979.
What is shown on the postcard
The foreground shows a grassy hillside with lush greenery, blooming lilac bushes, and chestnuts, where visitors are walking. In the midground, the domes of the St. George Cathedral and the bell tower of the Vydubychi Monastery are visible. The background features the Dnieper River spanned by the Paton Bridge, with the developing residential areas of the Left Bank under a clear sky.
Historical note
The botanical garden on the Zvirynets hills was founded in 1935, but its major development and opening to the public occurred in the post-war period. The viewpoint in the syringarium (lilac garden) became one of Kyiv’s most famous panoramic spots, offering a classic view of the historic 11th-century Vydubychi Monastery.
Present day
Today, this site is the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The viewpoint on the lilac slope remains highly popular, particularly in May when the lilacs bloom. The general panorama is preserved, though the Left Bank skyline has changed significantly with modern high-rise developments.
