This 1982 art postcard presents a view of the ruined Nevytsky Castle, located in the Uzhhorod Raion of the Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the remains of rubble stone defensive walls rising on a hill. In the center is a square defensive keep (donjon) with a wooden hipped roof and an observation gallery. To the right is a round corner tower with a high conical shingled roof. Figures of visitors are visible on top of the ruined stone ramparts. The foreground is occupied by a steep, rocky slope covered with grass and shrubs.

Historical note

The construction of fortifications at the site of Nevytsky Castle began in the 13th century to protect trade routes. The stone fortress took its main shape in the 14th–15th centuries during its ownership by the Drugeth family. The castle was destroyed in 1644 during internecine wars by the troops of Transylvanian Prince George II Rákóczi and was never restored to its original military purpose. During the Soviet period, the castle ruins were partially conserved, and the wooden roofs of the towers were reconstructed.

Present day

Currently, Nevytsky Castle holds the status of an architectural monument of national significance in Ukraine. The wooden roof of the main keep collapsed due to decay during a storm in March 2019. Periodic emergency and restoration works are conducted on the site to prevent further destruction of the masonry.
