The 1984 postcard captures the monumental V. I. Lenin monument in Zaporizhzhia, located on Lenin Square (now Zaporizka Square) against the backdrop of the Dnieper River, which was one of the city’s key symbols during the Soviet era.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows the V. I. Lenin monument in all its monumentality. The full-height figure of the leader stands on a tall, trapezoidal pedestal. The inscription «ЛЕНИН» (LENIN) is clearly visible on the pedestal. At the base of the pedestal, there is a multi-figure composition symbolizing the Soviet people.
In the background, the wide Dnieper River is visible. The square around the monument is paved, and part of it is adorned with red flowers. Several people and a child on a bicycle are visible in the square, giving the scene an everyday character.
Historical note
The V. I. Lenin monument in Zaporizhzhia was officially unveiled on November 6, 1964, in honor of the 47th anniversary of the October Revolution. It was erected on the square, which in Soviet times was named Lenin Square, near the Dnipro HES dam. The sculptors of the monument were well-known artists M. Lysenko, M. Sukhodolov, and V. Boroday, along with architects N. Sukharkina and E. Poliak.
The monument served as an important ideological and urban planning accent, symbolizing the leading role of the Communist Party and the working class in the region’s development.
Present day
As part of Ukraine’s decommunization policy, the V. I. Lenin monument in Zaporizhzhia was dismantled in March 2016. Today, the square where it was located has been renamed Zaporizka Square. The site where the monument stood remains vacant, awaiting a new development concept or the installation of a different symbol. The dismantling of the monument was part of a nationwide process of re-evaluating the Soviet legacy.
