This 1983 postcard features a view of Kalinin Square in Minsk, one of the significant transport and public thoroughfares of the city during the period of the Byelorussian SSR.
What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground of the postcard, a well-maintained flowerbed with vibrant red and white flowers is visible, behind which five massive Ionic columns frame the central perspective of the square. Through the columns, the monument to Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin can be seen in the distance. Behind it stands a multi-story brick-colored residential building, on the roof of which the illuminated inscription “СССР СТРАНА ДРУЖБЫ” (USSR LAND OF FRIENDSHIP) is clearly visible. The square is bustling with pedestrians, highlighting its lively character.
Historical note
Kalinin Square was named after the prominent Soviet statesman Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin. It took shape after the Great Patriotic War during the reconstruction of Minsk and became an important hub on Moscow Avenue (now Independence Avenue). The monument to M.I. Kalinin, erected in 1978, was created by sculptor A.K. Glebov and architect A.V. Troitsky.
Present day
Today, Kalinin Square retains its name and importance as a transport hub. The monument to M.I. Kalinin remains its central feature. The architectural appearance of the square has largely remained the same, representing an example of post-war Stalinist construction, although the surrounding infrastructure and landscaping are constantly being updated.
