Historical note
The Irkutsk State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (ISPIFL) was founded in 1948. The building shown on the postcard, located on Lenin Street, is an example of Soviet monumental classicism (“Stalinist Empire style”). For many years, the institute was the leading specialized higher education institution in Eastern Siberia, training specialists in English, German, French, and Chinese.
Present day
In 2016, the Irkutsk State Linguistic University (the successor of ISPIFL) was reorganized and integrated into Irkutsk State University (ISU) as the Institute of Philology, Foreign Languages and Media Communication. The building at 8 Lenin Street continues to serve educational purposes, preserving its historic architectural appearance.
