Card House-Museum I Party Congress. Minsk, 1983

This 1983 postcard depicts the House-Museum of the I Congress of the RSDLP in Minsk, a significant historical site associated with the early history of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows a single-story wooden building, painted green, with a distinctive gabled roof over the entrance, illuminated at night. Snow-covered trees surround the building, indicating a winter setting. A snow-dusted fence is partially visible along the front of the property. Grid-patterned windows and streetlights contribute to the nighttime ambiance.

Historical note

The House-Museum of the I Congress of the RSDLP is dedicated to the First Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, which took place in Minsk from March 1-3, 1898. The congress itself did not occur in this specific building, but in another house that has not been preserved. The current museum building is a reconstruction, built in 1923 on the presumed site of the original congress house, and opened to the public in 1928. It was destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in 1948, becoming one of the first museums in Minsk to be restored.

Present day

Currently, the House-Museum of the I Congress of the RSDLP continues to operate as a museum, functioning as a branch of the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus. Its exhibits detail the preparation and conduct of the congress, as well as the early stages of the workers’ movement in Belarus. The museum remains an important historical and cultural landmark in Minsk.
