Card Hotel Angara, 1978

A 1978 Soviet postcard depicting the Angara Hotel in Irkutsk during the winter season.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the snow-covered facade of the multi-story Angara Hotel building. A large sign reading “АНГАРА” is installed on the roof. Below it, along the upper facade, is a red propaganda banner with white text reading “…СОЮЗ СОВЕТСКИХ СОЦИАЛИСТИЧЕСКИХ РЕСПУБЛИК…”. The foreground features tree branches and bushes heavily laden with snow.

Historical note

The Angara Hotel was built in 1969 on the city’s central square (Kirov Square). It represents a typical example of Soviet modernist architecture, designed to accommodate the numerous tourists and official delegations visiting Irkutsk and Lake Baikal.

Present day

Today, the building continues to operate as the three-star Angara Hotel. The facade has been renovated and modernized, and the Soviet-era signs and slogans have been removed, though the overall architectural form of the Soviet period remains preserved.
