The 1957 postcard features the Government House of the Georgian SSR, located on Tbilisi’s central artery – Rustaveli Avenue. The building is a monumental example of Stalinist architecture with elements of national craftsmanship, dominating the city’s architectural ensemble.

What is shown on the postcard

The image displays the main building of the Government House with its characteristic arcades and massive columns, creating a rhythmic facade. In front of the building, a spacious square is visible, partly occupied by green areas and pedestrian paths where a few passers-by stroll. A red city bus is parked or moving on the street in front of the square, indicating active urban life. In the background, behind the building, older city structures and the outlines of mountain ranges, characteristic of Tbilisi’s landscape, can be seen.

Historical note

Construction of the Government House began in 1938, designed by architects Viktor Kokorin and Giorgi Lezhava. Work was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War and finally completed in 1953. The building was erected in the Stalinist Empire style, combining features of Neoclassicism with elements of traditional Georgian architecture, including characteristic arches and a monumental appearance. Initially, it was intended to house the government of the Georgian SSR.

Present day

Currently, the building houses the Parliament of Georgia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Georgia’s independence, it became one of the most important symbols of the sovereign state. Over the past decades, the building’s exterior has largely been preserved, although it has undergone minor changes. It continues to be a significant architectural and political center for Tbilisi and the entire country.
