Card Chalet “Khortytsya”, Zaporozhye, 1985

This 1985 Soviet postcard features the main building of the “Khortytsia” tourist base, located on the historic Khortytsia Island in Zaporizhzhia.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a four-story hotel-type residential building designed in the Soviet modernist style. The facade features long balconies with metal railings and red curtains in the room windows. A large sign reading “ТУРБАЗА ХОРТИЦЯ” is installed on the roof. A wide flat canopy supported by pillars extends over the main entrance, where a person is standing. The foreground is paved with concrete slabs, surrounded by green trees.

Historical note

The Khortytsia tourist base was a key component of Zaporizhzhia’s tourism infrastructure during the 1970s and 1980s. The complex was designed to accommodate Soviet and international tourists visiting the Khortytsia National Reserve and the Dnipro River. The architecture is characteristic of late modernist resort and leisure design in the USSR.

Present day

In the post-Soviet era, the complex was privatized and underwent several renovations. Today, the original modernist appearance of the building has been partially altered due to modern reconstructions, and the site continues to serve hotel and recreational purposes.
