At the center of the panorama stands a monumental building with distinctive vertical facade elements, which at the time of the photograph was known as the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren. Historical note

Lunacharsky Boulevard in Minsk, named after the Soviet statesman Anatoly Lunacharsky, was part of the central city thoroughfare. The building dominating the postcard was constructed as the Minsk City Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren and opened in 1936, becoming an important center for extracurricular activities for children and teenagers. After the Great Patriotic War, the building was restored and expanded, continuing its work in developing the creative abilities of youth. In the late 20th century, Lunacharsky Boulevard was renamed.

The Palace of Pioneers served as a significant cultural and educational hub, offering a wide range of clubs and sections for children. It hosted various events, fostering the talents and civic-mindedness of Minsk’s young generation.

Present day

Currently, the former Lunacharsky Boulevard is part of Nezavisimosti Avenue (Independence Avenue), one of Minsk’s main arteries. The building of the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren functions as the National Centre for Artistic Creativity of Children and Youth of the Republic of Belarus. It continues to be a significant cultural and educational institution, offering a wide range of clubs and sections for children and teenagers. The green area captured in the postcard has retained its recreational function, though its landscaping has undergone changes over time.
