Card At the Minsk Sea. Minsk, 1980

A 1980 postcard depicting the “Tourist” Hotel in Minsk, situated on the bank of the Svislach River. Although the postcard is titled “Near the Minsk Sea,” the building is located by the Svislach River, which is part of the water system that includes the Zaslawskaye Reservoir, known as the Minsk Sea. The hotel was opened shortly before the postcard’s release, becoming a prominent landmark in the city’s architecture.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground of the postcard features the “Tourist” Hotel building – a multi-story tower characteristic of typical late 1970s Soviet architecture. Adjacent to the main tower is a lower building, on the facade of which a large monumental relief is visible. Green spaces surround the buildings, and in the background, the body of water of the Svislach River can be seen. The overall view creates the impression of a well-maintained recreational area.

Historical note

The “Tourist” Hotel in Minsk was commissioned in 1978. The building’s design was developed by architects S.B. Rubenok and V.I. Shcherbina. The hotel was intended for accommodating tourists and city guests arriving via tourist routes. Its location on Partizanski Avenue provided convenient access to transport hubs and central districts. The monumental relief on the adjacent building is an example of Soviet monumental and decorative art, typical of that period.

Present day

Currently, the “Tourist” Hotel continues to operate as one of Minsk’s major hotels. Although its architectural appearance has retained features of Soviet modernism, the building has undergone periodic renovations and modernizations to meet contemporary standards. The area around the hotel remains a significant transport and residential hub of the city, and the Svislach embankment continues to be a popular leisure spot.
