Volgograd. The ensemble-monument to the heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad
The memorial ensemble “To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad” on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd was built from May 1959 under the sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and dedicated on 15 October 1967. The cards in this section followed soon after, in 1968 and 1970.
The 1968 cards show the hill as a whole, a panorama of the ensemble, the sculpture group on Heroes’ Square and the large relief with the entrance to the Hall of Military Glory — a round hall without side windows where the Eternal Flame burns in a sculpted hand holding a torch. The 1970 card is devoted to the main statue, captioned “Motherland”, which stands 85 metres tall including its pedestal.
The hill saw fierce fighting from September 1942 to January 1943. These vintage postcards of Mamayev Kurgan record the memorial in its first years after opening.
