Old postcards Chronicle IX IFF
The 9th Moscow International Film Festival ran from 10 to 23 July 1975. The Soviet postcards in this subsection were printed in 1976 and, as the series title (a festival chronicle) suggests, portray its guests: actors and directors from many countries, Soviet ones included.
The outcome of the competition is recalled by a card showing Ettore Scola with Vittorio Gassman. Scola’s We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974), with Gassman in one of the leading roles, won one of the three Golden Prizes, alongside Andrzej Wajda’s The Promised Land and Akira Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzala. The jury included the Japanese actress Komaki Kurihara and the Bulgarian actress Nevena Kokanova; both appear in the series, Kurihara on a shared card with Oleg Vidov.
The set also features stars well known to Soviet audiences. Raj Kapoor (1924–1988), the Indian actor and director, was famous in the USSR above all for Awaara (The Vagabond). Franco Nero rose to fame with the western Django (1966), and the Polish actress Barbara Brylska became popular in the USSR as Nadya in Eldar Ryazanov’s The Irony of Fate.
Unlike the actor portrait series, this set is tied to a single event, the Moscow festival of summer 1975.
