Card Pioneer camp “Scarlet Sails”, Yevpatoria, 1982

1

This 1982 vintage artistic postcard captures the architectural complex of the ‘Alye Parusa’ (Scarlet Sails) pioneer camp in Yevpatoriya, situated along the tram line on Polupanova (now Kyivska) Street.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground, a single-track section of the Yevpatoriya narrow-gauge tramway is shown with a red and yellow two-axle Gotha T57 tram car in motion. Behind a light metal fence lies the lush green territory of the pioneer camp. The main architectural element is a long four-story residential building designed in the Soviet modernist style, featuring open balcony-galleries on each floor. This building is connected to an adjacent block via an enclosed glazed gallery bridge. A taller residential high-rise rises in the background on the right.

Historical note

The ‘Alye Parusa’ pioneer camp was established during the Soviet era as a specialized children’s health resort. Its modernist structures were designed as part of a state program to develop Yevpatoriya into the premier children’s health resort of the USSR. The local narrow-gauge tram system (1000 mm gauge), operational since 1914, traditionally connected the seaside sanatorium districts with the city center.

Present day

Today, the complex continues to operate as the ‘Alye Parusa’ children’s sanatorium. The Soviet modernist architectural ensemble has largely preserved its historical appearance, with only minor modern renovations. The single-track tramway on Kyivska Street remains active, representing a unique transport heritage site of the city.
