A 1974 collectible postcard depicting the State Bank building in Chisinau, Moldavian SSR.
What is shown on the postcard
The image captures a modernist multi-story office building of the financial institution with distinct vertical facade elements and narrow concrete pylons. In the foreground, there is a pedestrian area with young trees, passersby, and a portion of an adjacent building featuring a sign “Магазинул” (Store) in Cyrillic. Balconies of a residential building are visible on the near right.
Historical note
The building of the Moldavian Republic Office of the USSR State Bank was erected in the early 1970s during the large-scale development of Prospekt Molodyozhi (now Grigore Vieru Boulevard). The architecture of the complex showcases typical features of Soviet brutalism and the International style.
Present day
Currently, this modernist building houses the National Bank of Moldova (Banca Națională a Moldovei). While the area surrounding Grigore Vieru Boulevard has undergone urban development, the building itself has preserved its original architectural appearance and continues to function as the country’s main financial hub.
