Card Monument to fighters for Soviet power. Chisinau (1974)

This 1974 Soviet postcard depicts the Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power in Chișinău, located in the square in front of a modernist cinema building.

What is shown on the postcard

The photograph features a tall granite obelisk topped with a bronze sculpture of a worker with his right hand raised. The heavy stone pedestal bears bilingual inscriptions in Moldovan (written in Cyrillic script) and Russian: “To the Fighters for Soviet Power”. In the background, the light-colored cinema building with patterned screens on its upper-floor windows is visible. A circular green lawn surrounds the monument, and pedestrians are seen walking nearby.

Historical note

The monument was officially unveiled in Chișinău in 1966 to commemorate historical revolutionary events in the region. The sculpture was designed by the prominent Moldovan artist Lazar Dubinovsky. The monument was placed in the square before the “40 Years of Komsomol” cinema (later renamed “Gaudeamus”) to create a unified architectural ensemble.

Present day

Today, the Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power remains in its original position on Pan Halippa Square and is protected as a local historical landmark. In contrast, the former Gaudeamus cinema building, visible in the background of the postcard, was closed and demolished in the late 2010s and early 2020s to make way for a new residential development.
