What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground, the square in front of the Victory Arch is visible, with several pedestrians walking across it. To the right stands a street lamp and blooming rose bushes. In the center rises the double-tiered white stone triumphal arch with a round clock on the upper tier. In the background, the dome of the Cathedral is visible behind green trees.
Historical note
The arch was built in 1840, designed by architect I. Zaushkevich, to house a 400-pood bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The structure combines the functions of a triumphal arch and a belfry. During the Soviet era, it was officially referred to as the Victory Arch.
Present day
Today, the monument is known as the Triumphal Arch (Arcul de Triumf) and is a cultural heritage site of Moldova. It is located on the Great National Assembly Square in central Chișinău, and the clock on the arch remains operational.
